The Sorcerer was one of the faces of the Druid priest. They were also the Bards who preserved the ancient stories, herbalists, the ones who performed ceremonies that marked the passages of people through the ceremonial year. They also studied the arts of magic. This image of the Sorcerer is preserved in the Arthurian legends, where Merlin, the chief among the Druid priests, offered his service and power to King Arthur for the preservation of England. Sorcerers were said to be able to take on any form they desired, changing themselves into animals at will. They were said to be able to see the future by gazing into a crystal ball. Above all, they could journey into the spirit realm, where they learned about mysteries that went beyond what could be revealed through words.
